Historical background and why we care about this old house
In the distant past, the house was part of Château Lacoste as a wine cellar. Its former or original function is unknown. The house, dated 1754 on a lintel chiseled with an even older date, was occupied on the first floor, while work was carried out on the ground floor. The first floor, then a single room, was used for living, dining, and sleeping. Traces of a cantou (a large fireplace) are still visible, and there are several large and small alcoves. The passageway between the house and the neighbor's (at the time an instrument maker) still exists, but access has been blocked for privacy. The beveled doorposts are still visible. As soon as Château Lacoste underwent another renovation or modernization phase—in keeping with the times—the "discarded building materials," though still precious stones, were reused to renovate houses and barns. A photo at the local bakery shows that the house still has a barn door. The barn door has been given a window and is otherwise covered with stacked stones, part of a beveled window jamb, and part of a window ornament. Above the first-floor window is a lintel with two dates: 1667 and 1754. On the other side of the house, where there is now a small communal lawn with raised planters, there was also a house that burned down. Behind the lawn is Salviac's pétanque court. Both rooms once belonged to the Château. The Château was therefore well enclosed and protected on the eastern side by houses with 80 cm thick walls, along with the current fire department building. The roof has a ridge ornament, épi de faîtage, made in Uzech-les-Oules. The potters there created two very special examples: a feminine roof ornament with a nipple and a masculine roof ornament ending in four handles symbolizing the cardinal directions. They were placed to bring balance to the house. This house features only the masculine version. These shapes, composed of four spheres placed one on top of the other, symbolize the four elements: water, air, earth, and fire.
